This grilled ham and cheese with honey mustard is a toasty, melty taste of sandwich heaven!πŸ˜πŸ˜‹ It takes ham and cheese to the next level, y’all.

My son calls this The Best Sandwich In the World. πŸ’™πŸ€£ He is five years old, so his tastes are pretty basic. I must admit, though, it is one of my favorite sandwiches at the moment.

It is so great with a bowl of soup, or all by itself! Side note: Scroll down to see other recipes this would be good with, along with links to said recipes.

Here are the ingredients I am using: sprouted grains bread (not pictured), ham, sliced havarti cheese, mayo, dijon mustard and honey. Plus I use a little butter when I toast it up in the pan, also not pictured.

Mayo mustard honey ham and havarti cheese

I make a little homemade honey mustard to go it, right there on the bread. And y’all, I confess that I never measure the condiments when I make this. πŸ˜†πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ But I measured it out for y’all to make sure it tastes right!

I just put a little mayo, dijon mustard and honey right on the bread.

Then I just mix it with my knife and spread it around.

Then I transfer half of it to the other piece of bread, and I spread it on both pieces to make it even. Easy peasy!

Next, I layer on the ham and sliced havarti cheese.

Adding ham and havarti cheese to sandwich

You can use any cheese on this sandwich, but this is our absolute favorite. Also, we like the Trade Joe’s sliced havarti the best! But any brand will work.

Now, I admit that we often eat the sandwich cold, just as it is. I pack this in my son’s lunch. But to make it even better, we heat it up.

We just toast this up on the stovetop in a frying pan with a little butter. And the result? The most glorious, yummy, ooey, gooey sandwich. It might just become your new favorite too. πŸ˜‰

Ingredients

  • 2 slices sprouted grains bread (or your favorite bread - we like Trader Joe's Daily Bread)
  • 1 slice havarti cheese
  • 2 to 3 slices deli ham (I used Applegate Farms)
  • 1 Tablespoon mayonaise (Duke's is our favorite, but Hellmann's or Trader Joe's are good too)
  • 1 teaspoon dijon mjustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon honey
  • 3/4 Tablespoon butter divided in half - one half for each side of the sandwich

Instructions

  1. Add mayo, mustard and honey to one slice of bread, and mix it with the knife, spreading to coat the bread.

  2. Transfer some of the mix to the other slice of bread, and spread it.

  3. Layer on the ham and sliced cheese, and place the other piece of bread on top.

  4. Preheat a frying pan on the stovetop over medium-high heat for about a minute.

  5. Add half the butter to the pan, and let it melt about half way.

  6. Carefully place the sandwich into the pan, rotating it to evenly distribute the melted butter.

  7. Allow it to cook until the bread tosts, about 4 minutes.

  8. Scoop up the sandwich with a flipper, but before you flip it over back into the pan, add the other half of the butter.

  9. Then flip the sandwich over, rotating it to coat the other side evenly with the melting butter.

  10. Cook for another two minutes, being careful not to burn. Note: The 2nd side always cooks faster. I actually turn my burner off, and let it cook the last minute without heat. (I have a smooth top electric stove, so it stays hot)

  11. Remove the sandwich from the pan, and serve.
