Yes, sweet potatoes are one of the powerhouse veggies. They pack tons of fiber, vitamin A, vitamin A and other great nutrition. Plus they taste really good.
It only takes a little bit of oil to give them that crispy outside texture, which makes this a healthier alternative to regular fries. Olive oil is also really good for you. I use avocado oil to make these too. A little oil goes a long way, and it is so much better for you than deep frying.
How to make oven baked sweet potato fries
Here is how to make the BEST oven baked sweet potato fries with crisp edges. For the first step, go ahead and preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Next, gather your ingredients.
Ingredients
For tastiest results, always use the best quality ingredients you have access to.
To make this oven baked sweet potato fries recipe, you will need the following ingredients:
- Sweet potatoes
- Oil of choice – I recommend olive or avocado, or even cooking spray. Coconut oil works as well.
- Paprika
- salt and black pepper
- Optional: garlic powder
Some people add corn starch, but I fins that adding excess starch is not neccessary.
How to cut sweet potato fries
Slice up your sweet potato with a good sharp chef’s knife into fry pieces. Do this by cutting off the skinny ends, and then cutting the sweet potato in half, right through the thickest part of the potato in the middle.
Next, sit one half up on the flat side, and start cutting slices. I did four slices in this case. This can vary, based on the width of your potato.
Try to keep these around the same size. You can go thinner or fatter than I did, but just keep it semi-consistent. You gotta commit to your fry size, people. 😆🙃
Mine are about pinkie finger sized, between 1/4 in and 1/2 inch.
Alrighty then, let’s get to seasoning and cooking!
Seasoning
Place the potato slices in a mixing bowl, along with the oil, salt, pepper and paprika.
Toss to coat.
How to bake sweet potato fries
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Those silicone baking mats also work really well and produce zero waste.
Arrange the potatoes on the baking sheet in a single layer.
Then bake for about 35 minutes, or until they start to turn golden brown. Bake time may vary based on the size of your fry cut. So use common sense here.
This is the look you are going for though. Look at those crispy edges! Yum!
Serve immediately.
Pair with ketchup, fry sauce or your favorite dipping sauce.
Lazy Girl Tips
I prefer to leave the skin on my sweet potatoes. It is just easier, plus I like eating the skins. Feel free to peel yours if you choose.
I prefer to use parchment paper to line my baking sheet. I find this works much better than cooking spray at preventing the fries from sticking to the pan. Plus, it makes for super easy clean-up.
Tip: I buy my parchment paper in gargantuan sized rolls from Costco. It is WAY cheaper there than it is at my grocery store. You could try a silicon baking liner, or just use cooking spray if you don’t have any parchment paper on hand.
Can I make this oil free?
Yes! For best results, I recommend using the oil. However, it will work without oil. It changes the texture a little bit, but they are still very tasty, and I have done this many times. The seasoning may also tend to fall off a little more without oil.
Another alternative is to use cooking spray or an oil sprayer to reduce the amount of oil.
There are many reasons some may need to reduce or eliminate oil. And sometimes, in more practical terms, we run out of things! Either way, these will still be good without oil.

Finally!!! Someone who actually measures the weight of an ingredient rather than just saying “large” with no reference to what “large” means. Thank you for that. Oh, and this was excellent.

Yay Jack! I am so happy that detail was helpful and that you are enjoying it. 🙌🏻
Carol says
Do you wash the potatoes at all first?

These were absolutely delicious! So crispy and tender, but not mushy like some other recipes I’ve tried.
Marjorie @APinchOfHealthy says
That is great to hear, Kal!
Andrea Cruzado says
Is it possible to make this with absolutely no oil? Im deathly allergic 🙁
Marjorie @APinchOfHealthy says
You can make it without oil, but they might not get quite as crispy. Have you considered an air fryer? They do a great job with crisping things up without oil. Just FYI.
Audrey says
This is one of my go-to recipes!

i’m very young and have little to no experience with cooking so mine got a bit burnt but i liked them a lot! next time i do it i will turn down the temperature a bit but even my dad who doesn’t like sweet potato fries loved them. good recipe!
Marjorie @APinchOfHealthy says
Yay, Olivia! I love that you are learning to cook. That is so cool.😎🙌🏻 Glad y’all liked the fries.
Deb says
Not crispy but very tasty. I didn’t use parchment paper because I didn’t have it but they were very good. I used rosemary instead of paprika because I like it better. Our son was visiting and liked it too. It was easy to cut up the potato and it made more than I thought it would. Will definitely make it again.
Marjorie @APinchOfHealthy says
Glad you enjoyed it, Deb!
Andy says
If you want to make your fries more crunchy/crispy, I recommend boiling the potatoes for a few minutes first, tossing them in oil, baking them at a slightly higher temperature (be careful with the time) and then seasoning them!
