How to make homemade spaghetti sauce
Here is how to make this easy homemade spaghetti sauce. Heat up a large sauté pan to medium heat.
Once hot, add in the ground beef and cook until it is no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as you cook it.
Season the meat with a little salt and pepper.
Add in the onion and garlic and cook until the garlic is fragrant, about 1-2 minutes, stirring the onion and garlic into the meat as it cooks.
Stir in the tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, honey or sugar and some more salt and pepper and bring the mixture to a low simmer, stirring frequently. Let the sauce simmer for 20 to 25 minutes.
Use a potato masher or fork to break up the tomatoes as they cook.
Serve warm over your favorite fresh cooked pasta with a garnish of chopped basil.

Storing and reheating homemade spaghetti sauce
Leftovers can be stored in the fridge in a covered container for up to 4 days. Or you can freeze leftover spaghetti sauce in an airtight container to use to make ahead/ use later. It will stay good in the freezer for 3 to 6 months.
When you get ready to use frozen sauce, fully thaw first. Then heat in a sauce pan until it simmers for a few minutes to heat through. You can add a splash of water, if needed. It will evaporate during reheating, but it will also help facilitate heating, if the sauce is particularly thick. Make a fresh batch of pasta to go with the sauce.
What is the difference between spaghetti sauce and marinara?
So spaghetti sauce versus marinara – what is the difference? Typically, marinara sauce does not contain meat, but only tomatoes and other aromatics such as garlic and onions, plus herbs.
Spaghetti sauce typically contains meat, whether it be ground beef or Italian sausage. It is a bit heartier, typically, than marinara.
Also, marinara can be used as a dipping sauce.

FAQs
Yes! One option is to use one of the popular plant-based beef substitutes, Beyond Meat or Impossible meat. Both work well in this recipe, and you prepare it exactly like the ground beef.
You could, but it isn’t necessary. As a side note, I did an easy version of a one pot Instant Pot spaghetti if you are interested. It is not homemade, but uses store bought sauce for a quick, easy alternative to fast food.
To thicken, just simmer a bit longer. This will evaporate more of the liquids and thicken the sauce.
