How to make garlic butter chicken
First, gather your ingredients.
Ingredients
For best taste, always use the highest quality ingredients you have access to.
To make this easy garlic butter chicken recipe, you will need the following ingredients:
- boneless skinless chicken breast
- all-purpose flour
- kosher salt
- ground black pepper
- neutral oil
- unsalted butter
- garlic
- chicken broth
- chopped parsley
You can use regular or gluten-free flour for one pan garlic butter chicken. If available, we prefer Diamond Crystal kosher salt. Opt for avocado or canola oil as a neutral cooking oil. Vegetable broth can be used instead of chicken broth. Vegan butter is a good dairy-free substitute. Cilantro can be swapped in for parsley.
Cooking garlic butter chicken
Garlic butter chicken breasts are a simple recipe that can be made in just a few steps. Here is how to make it.
Prep the chicken:
Slice the chicken breasts in half horizontally to make four thin cutlets. Combine the flour, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/8 teaspoon pepper in a bowl. Pat chicken dry and dredge each piece in the flour mixture. Set aside.
Sear the chicken:
Heat oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Cook chicken for about 5 minutes per side, until mostly cooked through. Transfer to a plate.
Make the garlic butter sauce:
Lower heat to medium-low. Add butter to the pan. Once melted, stir in garlic and cook for 2 minutes. Add the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/8 teaspoon pepper, broth, and parsley. Simmer for 2 minutes.
Finish cooking the chicken:
Return chicken to the skillet. Spoon sauce over each piece. Cover and cook for another 10 minutes, until chicken reaches 165°F (for safety) or 180-190°F (for extra tenderness).
Rest and serve:
Turn off heat, baste again, and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
Recipe Tips
- Save time: Use pre-peeled garlic if you can find it!
- Serving ideas: This is perfect over fluffy rice, mashed potatoes, or with crusty bread.
- Dairy-free option: Swap in vegan butter.
- Try thighs: Boneless, skinless chicken thighs work great, and they’re super forgiving.
- Herb swap: No parsley? Cilantro works too!
Leftovers
Store leftovers in a covered container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Always use common sense and good judgment when it comes to leftovers, though! If something looks or smells funky, don’t eat it.
