This recipe wonderfully incorporates fresh garlic, bell peppers, and a burst of tangy sauce, making it one of the best tofu recipes you’ll come across.

How to Make Sweet and Sour Tofu Over Rice

First, gather your ingredients.

Ingredients

For best taste, always use the highest quality ingredients you have access to.

To make this Sweet and Sour Tofu Over Rice recipe, you will need the following ingredients:

  • Maple syrup
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Ketchup
  • Tamari or soy sauce
  • Rice vinegar
  • Brown sugar
  • Cornstarch
  • Minced garlic
  • Firm or extra firm tofu
  • Avocado oil
  • Red bell pepper
  • Green bell pepper
  • Chopped onion
  • Cooked jasmine rice
  • Toasted sesame seeds

For those who prefer an alternative to Tamari: soy sauce or coconut aminos can be great substitutes. Also, if you’re looking to make it a bit spicier, consider adding some red pepper flakes.

Cooking Sweet and Sour Tofu Over Rice

Sweet and Sour Tofu Over Rice is a simple recipe that can be made in just a few simple steps.

First, mix up the sauce: Add all sauce ingredients to a medium bowl and whisk well to combine. Set aside.

Cook the tofu: Add the tofu to a large bowl, add 1 tablespoon oil, tamari, and cornstarch and lightly toss the tofu to coat it all evenly.

Heat a frying pan to medium heat on the stovetop. Add the remaining oil. Once the oil is hot, then add the tofu and toss and cook until it is golden brown on all sides, about 3 to 5 minutes. Or until the tofu is golden brown like this.

Then transfer the cooked tofu to a plate or bowl. 

Cook the veggies: In the same pan you cooked the tofu in, add 1 tablespoon of oil. Once the oil is hot, add the bell peppers and onions and toss and cook for a few minutes until the veggies are soft.

Put it all together: Add the sweet and sour sauce to the pan with the vegetables and toss and cook it for 1-2 minutes. Add the tofu back to the pan and toss it in the sauce with the veggies.

Remove it from the heat.

Then serve immediately over a fresh bed of rice with a sprinkle of sesame seeds on top.

Leftovers

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days.

Ingredients

For the sweet and sour sauce

  • ⅔ cup maple syrup
  • ⅓ cup apple cider vinegar
  • ⅓ cup ketchup
  • 1 Tablespoon tamari or soy sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 Tablespoon minced garlic

For the tofu

  • 14.5 ounce block of firm tofu – drained and pressed, cut into 1 inch pieces
  • 2 Tablespoons avocado oil – divided
  • 1 Tablespoon tamari
  • 2 Tablespoons cornstarch

For the veggies

  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil
  • 1 red bell pepper – cut into 1 inch pieces
  • 1 green bell pepper – cut into 1 inch pieces
  • 1 cup chopped onion

Other

  • 3 cups Cooked jasmine rice – for serving, more or less
  • Toasted sesame seeds – for serving

Instructions

MIx up the sauce

  1. Add all sauce ingredients to a medium bowl and whisk well to combine. Set aside.

Cook the tofu

  1. Add the tofu to a large bowl, add 1 tablespoon oil, tamari and cornstarch and lightly toss the tofu to coat it all evenly.
  2. Heat a pan to medium heat on the stovetop. Add the remaining oil. Once the oil is hot, then add the tofu and toss and cook until it is brown on all sides, about 3 to 5 minutes. Or until your tofu reaches desired golden outer crust. Then transfer the cooked tofu to a plate or bowl.

Cook the veggies

  1. In the same pan you cooked the tofu in, add 1 tablespoon of oil. Once the oil is hot, add the peppers and onions and toss and cook for a few minutes until the veggies are soft.

Put it all together

  1. Add the sweet and sour sauce to the pan with the vegetables and toss and cook it for 1-2 minutes.
  2. Add the tofu back to the pan and toss it in the sauce with the veggies.
  3. Remove it from the heat and serve immediately over cooked rice with a sprinkle of sesame seeds on top.
