Ingredients

  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon honey or sugar
  • 1 cup buttermilk half and half or heavy cream will work as replacements
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or melted butter
  • ¼ cup green bell pepper chopped
  • ¼ cup yellow onion chopped
  • Olive oil cooking spray or cooking spray of choice

Instructions

  1. Mix the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, onion powder and chili powder in a medium size mixing bowl.

  2. Mix up the wet ingredients. In a separate larger mixing bowl, combine the egg, honey and milk and olive oil or butter.
  3. Mix up the batter. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix well to form a wet thick batter. Fold in the peppers and onions.
  4. Cook the hush puppies. Preheat the air fryer to 380 degrees F (this takes 5 minutes for my air fryer)

  5. Once the air fryer is ready, place a liner or piece of foil into the bottom of the air fryer basket and spray with cooking spray.

  6. Using a 2 tablespoon size ice cream scoop or large spoon, drop the biscuit dough into the air fryer basket, making sure to space each of the hush puppies about 2 inches apart. You will likely need to do this in batches.

  7. Close the basket and cook at 380 degrees F for 4minutes, then flip each one over and cook for 4 more minutes on the other side.

  8. Once they are done, spray them with olive oil spray and sprinkle with sea salt. Continue until you have cooked all of the hush puppies. This recipe yields about 12-15 hush puppies.

  9. Serve. Enjoy these warm with your favorite dipping sauce.

Nutritional information is approximate and was calculated using a recipe nutrition label generator.

Some air fryer models only cook in 25 degree increments. 375 degrees F should work just fine.👌🏻
