How to make shrimp creole
First gather your ingredients.
Ingredients
For tastiest results, always use the best quality ingredients you have access to.
To make this shrimp creole recipe, you will need the following ingredients:
- raw shrimp – peeled and deveined
- olive oil
- cajun seasoning (we love Tony Chachere’s)
- onion – I used yellow
- green bell pepper
- celery
- carrot
- garlic
- tomato sauce
- honey
- dried oregano
- dried basil
- bay leaf
- Cooked jasmine rice – optional for serving
- Fresh chopped parsley – optional for garnish. (Green onions would be another option.)
- salt and black pepper, to taste
We love fresh shrimp if we can find it. And gulf shrimp in particular (from Gulf of Mexico/ Florida coast), but use the best shrimp you have access to.
Making shrimp creole
Place the shrimp into a medium bowl, and drizzle it with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of creole seasoning. Toss and set aside.
Heat up a large skillet to medium heat and add the onion, pepper, celery, carrot, and garlic. Season with salt and pepper and toss and cook the veggies for 2-3 minutes.
Add the tomato sauce, honey, oregano, basil, and the rest of the creole seasoning. Stir and let it cook for 2 minutes. Then add the bay leaves to the sauce and cover and simmer for 10 minutes.
Then add the seasoned shrimp to the sauce.
Cook the shrimp in the sauce until it is pink and cooked through. This should only take a few minutes.
Remove the pan from the heat. Serve the creole shrimp over cooked rice and garnish with a sprinkle of fresh chopped parsley.
And if you like it spicy, feel free to add a dash of your favorite hot sauce. Store leftovers in an airtight container for about 3 to 4 days.
