Today I am sharing an easy recipe to make your own DIY microwave popcorn.
This DIY microwave popcorn is such a simple, healthy and delicious snack that everybody loves!
It’s that time of year again where everybody seems to want to seek out healthy meals and snacks. Whether you resolved to be more healthy in the new year or not, I think we can all agree on the need for delicious snacks.
Can I get an amen?!
Bonus points if they are made with simple ingredients and whole-foods friendly.
The pre-made microwave bags can contain a lot of chemicals and mystery ingredients. Plus they are kind of expensive! It is so easy to just make it yourself. Plus! When you make it yourself, you can control the quality of the ingredients that go into it.
I posted a DIY microwave popcorn how to video a few years back. In the video, I used canola oil. But I have been using coconut oil more lately, so I decided to do an official recipe post. You can use any other oil with a high smoke point. I have even used melted butter in its place, and it turns out delicious too.
Coconut oil is pretty delicious in this recipe, I must say! It has been a favorite lately. Side note: I bought mine at Costso, and they most definitely have the best price of anywhere else I have seen. But you can also buy coconut oil on Amazon, or at your local grocery store.
You can make adjustments to this basic recipe to change up the flavors. I love using truffle salt on mine. I have also done a cinnamon and sugar version. So good! And the possibilities are endless.

Some DIY microwave popcorn methods use brown paper bags. I have used this in the past, but I read that these brown lunch bags are not made for cooking, and they can contain toxins. So instead I use a glass bowl and a vented microwave cover.

DIY Microwave Popcorn
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup unpopped popping corn
- 1 Tablespoon coconut oil, melted
- sea salt to taste
Kitchen Tools Used
- Vented Microwave Cover
- Tempered glass bowl
Instructions
-
Add coconut oil to a large glass bowl. You may need to microwave it for a few seconds if it is cold in your house. Alabama in August? Not a problem! It will already be melted.
- Add popcorn kernels to the bowl, and stir to coat with the coconut oil.
- Place vented microwave cover on the glass bowl.
-
Microwave on high until popped. (Microwave times may vary. Mine is best at about 3 minutes, 30 seconds. Listen for the popping to slow down.) Or you can use the popcorn button, if you have one!
- Use oven mitts or a towel to remove bowl from the microwave (caution: bowl will be HOT!)
-
Salt to taste.
- Serve immediately.

Hi. Sounds delicious but was wondering about the approximate 12gr of saturated fat on the nutritional label Is this considered a better fat. I have heard wonderful things
In regard to coconut oil. Also any glass bowl and a regular
Microwave cover would work? Thanks so much
Marjorie @APinchOfHealthy says
Hi Susan! I am no nutritionist, so you’d really have to decide that for yourself. I am happy with using coconut oil as part of our diet and have no issues with it. This particular microwave cover is what I recommend (or something like it) because it raises above bowl level.

hi! happy to have found this, I love my popcorn but I know those microwave bags are not good for you. Question: does the ventable cover need to fit tightly on the bowl or can it just rest on top? Seems like it would ‘pop’ off. But I don’t think I have a bowl that would fit the ventable cover exactly.
Marjorie@APinchOfHealthy says
Hi Tricia! It can rest on top. As long as it will sit on the bowl, you are good to go. I hope you enjoy it!

Okay, this is brilliant! I never thought to use coconut oil, OR my microwave cover! (Visiting ya from #foodiefridays)

I hope you enjoy it Kristen! Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

Sounds pretty easy and yummy! I love popcorn but I agree those microwave bags are full of junk… but oh so much easier than getting out the air popper every time I want popcorn. I will have to save this recipe!
Marjorie@APinchOfHealthy says
So true Jenny! I actually got rid of my air popper recently. I prefer a little bit of oil/fat in my popcorn. It tastes better, and it fills me up a bit more. I hope you enjoy it!
