This creamy coleslaw recipe is a perfect side dish at all the spring and summer barbecues and pot lucks. And it is super simple to make too.
A classic coleslaw recipe is so versatile. You can pair it with smoked pork barbecue, hamburgers, or hotdogs. Or even with a good baked chicken, grilled chicken, grilled fish, chicken kebabs, etc.
I wanted to be sure and get this to y’all ahead of summer, and it truly is the best coleslaw recipe. This would be great for Memorial Day, Fourth of July and right on in to football/ tailgating season.
How to make the best homemade coleslaw
First, gather your ingredients.
Ingredients
This is a classic coleslaw recipe, so the ingredients are pretty standard. As always, the best quality ingredients will have the best-tasting result.
To make this classic coleslaw recipe, you will need the following ingredients:
- shredded green cabbage
- shredded purple cabbage (AKA red cabbage)
- shredded carrots
- mayo
- white wine vinegar
- maple syrup or honey
- celery seed
- salt and pepper
- parsley
The homemade dressing is what makes this extra special, in my humble opinion. It tastes great! Plus, there are no mystery ingredients.
If you want, you can cut some of the mayo with Greek yogurt. For best taste, I recommend using all mayo.
This creamy coleslaw definitely looks and tastes best if you buy whole cabbage and shred it yourself. You can use a food processor to to this. I mean, just look at all that color.😍
I am a realist, though. I know that sometimes you just need quick and easy! So feel free to sub/ use your favorite grocery store pre-shredded cabbage mixture or slaw blend, if you wish.
Assembling creamy coleslaw
When assembling this creamy coleslaw recipe, you need to keep timeline in mind. For best results, I recommend mixing everything up, and letting it all sit in the fridge for about an hour before you are ready to serve/ eat it.👌🏻
Now that you are aware of that, the rest is very simple. Just whisk up the creamy dressing, which to me is the best part. Then put all the veggies in a big bowl, and drizzle the dressing on top.
You can customize how much dressing you want to use here, if you wish. Just pour it on top, and then toss it all up until everything is well-combined.
I love how a little sprinkle of fresh parsley on top gives that bright bright green pop of color. Plus a pop of fresh flavor too.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days.
And now that you are all set for your next pot luck, let me know if you try it. I hope y’all enjoy!
