It’s a toasty, buttery, gooey, cheesy bit of heaven on a plate. It is such a simple recipe, and it pairs great with a bowl of tomato soup for a complete, easy, delicious meal!

How to make air fryer grilled cheese

First gather your ingredients.

Ingredients

For tastiest results, always use the best quality ingredients you have access to.

Ingredients with label text on white surface

To make an air fryer grilled cheese sandwich, you will need the following ingredients:

  • butter – preferably at room temperature
  • bread slices
  • sliced cheese

Of course, simple sandwich bread is always a great choice. You can always use whole grain bread, ciabatta, sourdough, french bread or bread of your choice.

As for the best cheeses to use, I would recommend American, cheddar, Colby jack, muenster, or whatever cheese you want.

Assemble

Spread the butter evenly on one side of each slice of bread. It helps greatly to use room temperature, softened butter.

Then place 2 slices of cheese slightly overlapping in between the buttered slices of bread with the buttered side of the bread facing outward to form 2 separate sandwiches.

Slices of bread with cheese on them

Using two slices gets the optimal melty cheese center. Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray, if you wish, to prevent sticking and place both sandwiches into the air fryer basket about 1 inch apart in a single layer.

How long and what temperature to air fry grilled cheese sandwich

SO what is a good cooking time for air fryer grilled cheese? Cook at 370 degrees F for 3 minutes. Then, carefully flip each sandwich over, increase the temperature to 380 degrees F and cook them for another 4-5 minutes until they are nice and golden brown and the cheese is super melty.

As always, for best results, keep an eye on things. If your bread looks toasty in less time, use common sense and good judgement. Air fryers can vary at times.

Remove, let cool for 1-2 minutes and enjoy! Just look at the ooey, gooey, toasty, cheesy perfection.
