Air Fryer Egg Rolls
Air Fryer Egg Rolls

These air fryer egg rolls are a lighter version of your restaurant favorite. They use far less oil than their traditional counterparts, thanks to the help of the trusty air fryer.

I am so excited to share these with y’all! And just for the record, I will never *not* order these in a restaurant. They are my fave! And I am an all-foods-fit kinda gal.

But when I make something myself, I like to do it more my style. And I was super curious how egg rolls would turn out in the air fryer. Spoiler alert: they turned out great!

Hence the recipe share.😉

Ingredients

These air fryer egg rolls are made with basic ingredients, and are modeled after the classic egg rolls you can get at a Chinese restaurant.

As always, get the best quality ingredients you have access to. This will ensure the best taste!

Making air fryer egg rolls

Cook the filling in a big pan on the stovetop first, per the recipe card instructions below. You can do it all in one pan – first the meat, then the veggies.

Brown the meat, and use a spatula to break it into little chunks. Transfer to drain on paper towels.

In the same pan,  add the sesame oil. Once the oil is hot, add in the garlic, ginger, celery and onion. Season with salt and pepper, toss and cook for about 3-4 minutes until the veggies are nice and soft and translucent.

Add the slaw, and cook 2 minutes more.

Meanwhile, mix up the sauce! Combine the soy sauce, maple syrup, vinegar and a pinch of salt and pepper in a small mixing bowl and whisk to combine. Then pour it over the mixture, add the cooked meat back in, and toss everything together.

Assembly

To assemble and wrap the air fryer egg rolls. place one egg roll wrapper so one of the tips of the wrapper is facing towards you.

assembling air fryer egg rolls putting filling in wrappers

Dip one of your fingers in some water and run your finger around the edge of the egg roll wrapper.

Place about 1 tablespoon of the veggie and meat filling into the bottom half of the wrapper that is facing towards you. Roll the wrapper over the filling and continue rolling it up away from you as you fold in the sides of the wrapper until you reach the end like a burrito.

Seal the edges with water. Some people prefer egg wash for this, but I find that water worked great.

Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the egg rolls in your air fryer basket, making sure to leave plenty of space. (2 batches worked great here). Then spray the tops of your egg rolls. This ensures better crisping/ browning.

Air fry on 400 (preheated) for about 6 minutes. Flip, and cook the second side until golden brown, about 4 additional minutes.

Serve with your favorite dipping sauce! We love the Trader Joe’s sweet chili sauce, by the way.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 1 pound Ground pork chicken, or turkey
  • 3 cloves garlic peeled and minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger peeled and minced
  • ¼ cup chopped celery
  • ½ onion diced
  • ¼ cup green onions chopped
  • 10 oz cabbage slaw (1 bag, or veggie slaw)
  • ¼ cup low sodium Tamari (or soy sauce)
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup (or sweetener of choice, such as agave or honey)
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • Salt and pepper
  • 12-15 egg roll wrappers
  • Olive oil cooking spray (or cooking spray of choice)
  • Asian sweet and sour sauce for dipping (we love Trader Joe's sweet chili dipping sauce)

Instructions

Cooking the filling

  1. Heat up a medium size skillet to medium heat.

  2. Once the pan is hot, add in the ground meat and break it up with a spatula or wooden spoon. Cook until it is nice and golden brown and cooked through. Transfer the cooked meat to a bowl or plate.

  3. In the same pan you cooked the meat in, turn the heat down to medium-low heat, add in 1 tablespoon sesame oil.

  4. Once the oil is hot, add in the garlic, ginger, celery and onion. Season with salt and pepper, toss and cook for about 3-4 minutes until the veggies are nice and soft and translucent.

  5. Add in the veggie slaw and toss and cook for 2 minutes.
  6. Meanwhile, combine the soy sauce, maple syrup, vinegar and a pinch of salt and pepper in a small mixing bowl and whisk to combine.

  7. Pour the sauce over the veggies in the pan and cook for 2 minutes.

  8. Add the meat back into the pan and toss it with the veggies and sauce. Turn the heat off and let the mixture cool for a few minutes.

  9. Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F - this takes about 5 minutes for most air fryers.

Assembling the egg rolls

  1. To assemble and wrap the egg rolls. Place one egg roll wrapper so one of the tips of the wrapper is facing towards you.

  2. Dip one of your fingers in some water and run your finger around the edge of the egg roll wrapper.

  3. Place about 1 tablespoon of the veggie and meat filling into the bottom half of the wrapper that is facing towards you. Roll the wrapper over the filling and continue rolling it up away from you as you fold in the sides of the wrapper until you reach the end like a burrito.

  4. Seal the edges with water. You can also use egg wash (1 egg lightly beaten in a small bowl with a ½ teaspoon of water). Repeat until all of the egg rolls are assembled, makes about 12-15 egg rolls.

  5. Spray the basket of the air fryer basket with the olive oil cooking spray and place the egg rolls into the basket in a single layer (you will likely have to do this in batches depending on the size of your air fryer).

  6. Spray the egg rolls with more cooking spray, close the basket and cook at 400 degrees F for 6 minutes, flip the egg rolls over, spray the other side with cooking spray and cook them for 4 more minutes until they are super crispy and golden brown on all sides.

  7. Continue the above steps until you have cooked all of the egg rolls.

  8. Remove, let cool and serve with sweet and sour asian dipping sauce.

Recipe Notes

Nutritional information is approximate and was calculated using a recipe nutrition label generator (calculation was run for 15 egg rolls).

Recipe Notes/ Substitutions

  • You can use ground pork, chicken, sausage, or even ground turkey for these egg rolls.
  • Store-bought veggie slaw of any kind works. You can also make your own by buying and shredding some cabbage and carrots. Just make sure it is about 10 oz of veggies.
  • Make sure not to overfill the egg rolls when you are assembling them or the wrapper may tear. 1 tablespoon of filling should be about the right amount.
  • Use egg wash or water to easily seal the egg rolls so the filling stays nice and intact while they are cooking.
  • Air fryers vary so for the cooking times, adjust as needed if the egg rolls seem to be getting too crispy. I found that 6 minutes on the first side and 4 minutes on the second side worked best with my air fryer.
  • To store these egg rolls. Let them cool completely then transfer them to an airtight container and keep them in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave for 35-45 seconds on high or in the air fryer at 350 degrees F for 3-4 minutes.

What is the secret to working with egg roll wrappers? We bought some last week and when we tried to use them for our egg rolls they stuck together, ripped, and were horrid to work with. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
