Air fryer chicken skewers are a wholesome and delicious dinner the whole family will love.
Hmmm, air fryer chicken skewers? Air fryer chicken kebabs? LOL, I struggle with what to name things.🤷🏼♀️
My new realization: Anything you make on the grill will pretty much be awesome in the air fryer. Chicken kebabs definitely fit into that category!
Ingredients
Always use the best quality ingredients you have access to. Here is what is in this air fryer chicken skewers recipe.
Ingredients for air fryer chicken skewers:
- boneless skinless chicken breast
- avocado oil
- low sodium Tamari or soy sauce
- garlic powder
- ground ginger
- chili powder
- honey or maple syrup
- green bell pepper
- red bell pepper
- yellow bell pepper
- zucchini
- red onion
- cooking spray
Side note: is it red onion or purple onion? 😆🤷🏼♀️ I use both interchangeably.
Marinate the chicken
You want to set aside at least 15 minutes to marinate the chicken.
Of course, you can marinate this overnight, if you wish. It will give the chicken even more flavor.
Assembling air fryer chicken skewers
Note: Make sure your skewers fit in your air fryer before you begin preparing this recipe. If your air fryer did not come with skewers, you can purchase some skewers like these on Amazon (👈🏻 Amazon affiliate link).
Also, be mindful of chopping your veggies all around the same size, about an inch. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it will help with even cooking.
You can load them up however you wish, but I recommend alternating veggies with chicken. This recipe made 7 skewers for me, but this is up to you.
I definitely recommend cooking these in batches, as not to overcrowd your air fryer basket.
Two batches worked well for me. You can place the first batch on a plate and cover with foil as the second batch cooks, FYI.
These turn out so delicious, y’all!

Air Fryer Chicken Skewers (Kebabs)
Air fryer chicken skewers are a wholesome and delicious dinner the whole family will love.
Ingredients
- 16 oz boneless skinless chicken breast cut into 1 inch pieces
- 1 tablespoon avocado oil
- 1 tablespoon low sodium Tamari or soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup
- 1 medium green bell pepper cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1 medium red bell pepper cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1 medium yellow bell pepper cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1 medium zucchini cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1 small red onion cut into 1-inch pieces
- cooking spray
Instructions
Marinate
-
Place the chicken into a medium size mixing bowl, drizzle with oil.
-
In a separate bowl, mix up the soy sauce, garlic, ginger, chili powder and honey.
-
Pour the sauce over the chicken and toss to coat it all. Let the chicken marinate for at least 15 minutes or overnight.
Assembly
-
Lay out the veggies in rows, place the chicken and veggies on skewers rotating and layering chicken, then a few pieces of veggies, then repeat until you have filled up each skewer leaving about ½ inch on each end so you can easily handle them.
Cook
-
Preheat the air fryer to 350 degrees F
-
Place the skewer holder inside the air fryer basket. Lay the chicken and veggies skewers on top of the holder and spray them with the cooking spray.
-
Cook for 7-9 minutes, turning the skewers over halfway through the cooking time.
-
Once the internal temperature of the chicken has reached 165 degrees they are done. You may need to do this in batches, depending on the size of your air fryer.
-
Serve the skewers over rice or enjoy with other sides, such as potatoes, green salad or pasta salad.

Can you use chicken breast tenderloins?
Marjorie @APinchOfHealthy says
Hi Christine! I think this would work. Enjoy!
Beth says
Quick question: how do you think canned pineapple chunks would do added in?
I looked at a bunch of chicken kebab and skewer recipes on line and decided to try yours tonight, since I have a large, raw, chicken breast left over from last night’s air fryer dinner. I also have Gilberts chicken sausages including their Aloha variety which has a bit of pineapple in it. I thought skewering those with pineapple and veggies could be great. . (Gilberts has lots of flavors, uses no chemicals, nitrates, nitrites etc. No affiliation!)
Marjorie @APinchOfHealthy says
Hi Beth! Your additions sound great. If they are the smaller pineapple chunks, they may be tough to get on a skewer. But larger chunks should work out well. I hope you enjoy the recipe!
Kim says
This sounds amazing and I want to try tonight but can I just do them in my oven? Not sure how long they would need?
Marjorie @APinchOfHealthy says
You could, Kim, although I am not sure how long they would need to cook. I have noticed that the air fryer does produce more of a grill-like texture with some browning on the outside, without overcooking on the inside. That would be more difficult to achieve in an oven, but likely still good.
Kim Motte says
Thank you so much for responding, unfortunately the response didn’t come through in time so I risked it and cooked in the oven. I gave them 30 minutes at 180°c and they came out perfectly. Although the chicken was maybe a touch dry but against the juicy veg it wasn’t that noticeable. I used a roasting tin and laid some foil on the bottom and then placed the kebabs on the rim of the tray so that they had space underneath to drip down and for the air to circulate.
The marinade was a big hit, and I in fact chucked any leftover veg and chicken pieces into it, left over night and then air fried them loosely the next day and they were delicious.
I’ve just finished up chopping some veg and chicken into a bowl and I’m going to use the same marinade again and then air fry this evening for my dinner.
It’s definitely been a huge hit with my family, both on a skewer and just as a tray bake style
Marjorie @APinchOfHealthy says
I am happy to hear it all worked out Kim!🙌🏻 Glad you are enjoying it.

I agree, these kabobs are a game-changer! 🙌 I’ve also tried them without skewers, and it works like a charm. Just marinate, air fry, and enjoy! 😋🍋 #DeliciouslyConvenient

Can’t wait to try them

I hope you enjoy them Elizabeth!

Can I freeze them as I live alone
Marjorie @APinchOfHealthy says
Good question. I am not completely sure, so eaten fresh will likely taste best. However, I do not see a problem freezing them. I would recommend thawing prior to cooking/ reheating, though. If you end up trying it, I’d be curious to know how it turns out.
Laurie Maynard says
This is excellent and easy to make. The chicken was tender, the marinade was delicious, and the vegetables were perfectly cooked in the time it took to cook the chicken. I did have to cook the chicken a bit longer (about 12 minutes), but I think that may have had to do with the size of the chicken pieces. I added mushrooms which were delicious.
Marjorie @APinchOfHealthy says
Yay Laurie!!
John says
Do you even need the skewers? Could I cut the chicken, marinate it and then put it straight in the air fryer?
Marjorie @APinchOfHealthy says
Hi John! I recommend using the skewers for best results. That being said, I don’t think it would hurt to try it without.

I found this recipe a few months ago and I swear I have made it every couple weeks! These kabobs are freaking amazing and I love that you get a little kick from the red pepper flakes but also the nice citrusy flavor from the lemon! And the fact that we can have kabobs all year round because they are in the air fryer
Marjorie @APinchOfHealthy says
Yay Tifany! I am so glad you are enjoying it.❤️

Where do the chilli flakes and lemon come in to the recipe?
