The sum of the ingredients is better than the individual parts with this one, y’all! The flavor of 7 layer dip is out of this world, and we have made some version of this recipe for years and years. Anybody else? Such a classic recipe!
What is 7 layer dip?
According to Wikipedia, it is a classic American appetizer that showed up in the early 1980s. It started in Texas, and was eventually published by Family Circle magazine in 1981 where it gained popularity.
The dish typically includes refried beans, guacamole, sour cream, cheese, tomatoes, olives and other toppings such as jalapeños, cilantro and green onion.
How to make 7 layer dip
First, gather your ingredients.
Ingredients
For tastiest results, always use the best quality ingredients you have access to.
To make this (recipe name), you will need the following:
- refried beans – homemade or store-bought
- Guacamole – homemade or store-bought
- sour cream
- taco seasoning
- fresh lime juice
- shredded Mexican blend cheese
- tomatoes
- sliced black olives
- green onion
- cilantro
Assembling 7 layer dip
Spread the refried beans evenly into the bottom of a casserole dish.
Add the guacamole over the top of the beans in another even layer.
In a medium bowl, combine the sour cream with the taco seasoning and lime juice. Spread the sour cream evenly over the guacamole.
Top everything with the shredded cheese, sliced tomatoes, olives, green onion and cilantro. Doesn’t it look so pretty with all the colors?!😍
And serve with your favorite tortilla chips, of course.
How to make this recipe vegan
7 layer dip is super simple to adapt to be vegan friendly and/or dairy free.
- Simply use vegan sour cream or cashew cream.
- Use your favorite shredded vegan cheese. This recipe is still very tasty without any cheese as well.
- Also, make sure your refried beans are vegetarian/ vegan.

How long does 7 layer dip last in the fridge?
Be sure and store any leftover 7 layer dip covered or in a lidded container in the refrigerator. It should be good for 3 to 5 days, depending on the freshness of your ingredients.

- 2 cups of refried beans – homemade or store-bought, vegetarian
- Guacamole – homemade or store-bought
- 1.5 cups sour cream
- 2 teaspoon taco seasoning (homemade or store-bought)
- 1 teaspoon fresh lime juice
- ¾ cup shredded mexican cheese (or measure cheese with your heart😉)
- 1 cup cherry tomatoes sliced, or any type of tomato diced/ sliced into small bites works
- ⅔ cup black olives sliced
- ¼ cup green onion sliced
- 2 tablespoons cilantro fresh chopped
Instructions
