Welcome to What I Ate Wednesday! Where I link up with Jenn and share a day of my healthy eats on Weight Watchers.
I have been wanting to give my blog a bit more of a professional look and feel lately. So I joined Food Blogger Pro last week.
I have been binge-watching Lindsay’s food photography videos. So you will see in today’s WIAW post I am experimenting with taking photos in different spots in my house, trying to figure out what space has the best lighting.
Side note: I have been BLOW AWAY by the value provided by Food Blogger Pro. I know that a lot of other food bloggers visit on Wednesdays, so I wanted to give this resource a mention. My only regret is that I didn’t join earlier! You should definitely check them out.
Breakfast was shot in my dining room, in front of a big triple window. I seem to get the best natural light in this room for the first half of the day. I had a protein shake: vanilla protein powder (4pp), unsweetened almond milk (1pp), a banana, a few frozen strawberries and some ice cubes. I also had two cups of coffee with sugar and half-and-half (2pp for the two cups).
For lunch I usually scavenge my leftovers and try to figure out something to make out of what I have on hand. Some wins, some losses with that approach! This particular day was a WIN. I had leftover pulled pork (4pp) on spinach with grapes, artichoke hearts, goat cheese (2pp) and my homemade Balsamic vinaigrette (1pp).
YUM! I am convinced that the secret to great salad is homemade dressing. Balsamic vinaigrette is my all time favorite because it is so versatile. It inspires me to mix sweet and savory flavors. This salad was so good! My lunch photo was in the same spot by the window in my dining room. I also had an iced coffee (1pp – not pictured).
By late afternoon, my family room had the best natural light. I had some DIY microwave popcorn (3pp) made with coconut oil (1pp). It was so yummy!
For dinner, I made chicken (4pp) on the grill pan, baked sweet potatoes (4pp) and broccoli. It wasn’t fancy, but it sure was good. I put half tablespoon of real butter (1pp) on my baked sweet potato, along with a sprinkle of cinnamon. My favorite brand is Kerrygold (NOT sponsored or paid to say that! I just like the taste).
By dinner time, the sun is just right to shoot photos outdoors. Our deck is shaded by this point, and it had great natural light. I didn’t do anything to style this shot at all, though. My toddler was home by this point, so I literally just took the plate outside really quickly and snapped a quick picture.
As far as the photos go, I will say that turning OFF the artificial overhead lighting was a huge aha moment for me. Overhead lights make my photos look yellow-ish.
I do have a DSLR camera, the Nikon D3100. For my level of experience, the Nikon D3100 is plenty good enough. As I progress in skill and expertise, I may upgrade to (A) an upgraded lense or (B) an upgraded camera. But this camera is a great value for the money, in my humble opinion. It takes great family photos too!
