Hello, my name is Marjorie.
I am the chief recipe developer, taste tester, photographer, photo editor, and writer here at A Pinch of Healthy.
This is my family.
I also have a furry child, my crumb catcher Scotty.
Welcome to my Blog!
Where I share tasty recipes and other ramblings. My specialty is tasty food with a healthy twist.
Heads up: I post plenty of treats too! And they are usually not tweaked to be “healthy” in any way. They are purely shared to be fully enjoyed without guilt or shame. Many of them are family recipes that I have eaten for years. And I have a personal policy to NOT include nutritional information with said treats. In my mind, it completely defeats the purpose of enjoyment.
Above all my recipes must taste good before I will share them with you. Because if something’s healthy and tastes like cardboard, nobody’s going to want to eat that! Amiright?!
My Take on Healthy
Now that word – healthy – has a LOT of connotation with it! It makes a lot of people think about unpleasant things like calorie restriction, exercising like a maniac, fat free products or diets. Not for me!
I have a very relaxed approach to healthy these days. I do not focus on “weight loss” or restrict myself in any way. I did restrict and focus on my weight for many, many years. And I finally decided that it wasn’t serving me very well.
I now practice intuitive eating, body acceptance and developing healthy habits. Not habits centered around weight or body shaping, but those habits that nourish me physically, emotionally and spiritually.
I love using fresh ingredients and whole, minimally processed foods. I am not perfect or militant about it, but I feel best when I am eating this way.
I think there is plenty of room for ALL kinds of food in the context of an overall healthy diet. I will never tell you not to eat a cupcake, a peanut butter cup or your favorite pizza.
Last, let me confess that I am not perfect. I do not proclaim to be a health guru or some shining example to be imitated.
I am just a regular girl who loves to cook and learn about food. I work hard to stay very authentic and true in the way that I share. And I hope that it helps to encourage those who have had a lot of the same struggles as me.
From Dieter to Intuitive Eating
Weight Watchers worked for me a bunch of times, but only in in the short-term. I noticed that whenever I would stop tracking my food and counting points that I would gain a little weight back. Every time this would happen, I would blame myself.
After the birth of my daughter in 2016, I was struggling with stress eating. And I was pressuring myself to lose that baby weight once again. I thought that if I could just get back to Weight Watchers that everything would be okay. They were launching their new SmartPoints program around this time, and I was super excited to try it!
But once I started the program, I struggled even worse! I ate more and felt terrible about myself. So I took a step back and started questioning everything.
My questions led me to intuitive eating. I am currently learning to reject “diets” altogether and eat more intuitively. And yes, I consider Weight Watchers to be a diet. Even though they have some very clever marketing folks that would tell you otherwise. 🙂
My definition of a diet is anything that tells you (where explicitly or implicitly) not to trust your own intuition with what and how much to eat.
I think that most women especially (and some men too!) have some really dysfunctional patterns with their eating. It is really hard not to have issues when (1) our society highly values thinness and (2) we have been told conflicting information about what we should eat our whole lives. Am I right?!
My goal is to get to a place where I can have true peace and health, and enjoy my life without obsessing over food, weight or diets. I believe that once you get in a good place with your health, stop obsessing with food that your weight will normalize.
I hope to call attention to the fact that health and well-being is based in things much deeper than just appearances and numbers. That is why you will see me talk a lot about mindset, self-image, human behavior, belief, gratitude and life in general.
